Don’t want to go out into Kananaskis Country on your own? Check out Meetup.com, a world-wide social network site that makes it easy for anyone to organize a local group of people with similar interests. There are several Meetup Groups in the Calgary area that participate in a variety of activities from easy hiking and snowshoeing to trail running and scrambling.
Look at their home pages where you will find out how many members they have and the number of Meetups they have held. The home page also contains a description of the goals of the group and level of difficulty of their excursions so you can select a suitable group. Note that none of these groups offer guided trips, you are responsible for you own well-being. Here are a few of the more active local Meetup Groups:
- Calgary Hiking, X-C Skiing and Snowshoe & Meetup Group
- Calgary Outdoor Recreation Association (CORA)
- Calgary Scrambling and Mountaineering Club
- Slow and Steady Hikers
- WHOA: Women Having Outdoor Adventures
- Easy Hiking and Outdoor Activities
- UofC Outdoor Adventurers
- Calgary Trail Runners
- The Canmore Hiking Meetup Group
A Meetup Group is a great way for a small club without a website to organize their outings. Groups can be private and hide content from non-members. Also, membership can be restricted to members who are approved or invited to join.
