Marushka (Shark) Lake Snowshoe

by Brenda Everitt on January 6, 2010

Marushka (Shark) Lake is a short, easy snowshoe trip. I first tried this trip a couple of years ago and it is one I repeat each year — partly because I run out of trips that aren’t in avalanche danger and partly because of the wonderful views of Spray Lake.

At 9 km roundtrip and only a small elevation gain this is a good trip if you are looking for a late start, a short trip or an easy outing. This is not an official trail, so be prepared to use the directions in Kananaskis Country Trail guide, Volume 1 combined with the GemTrek map for Canmore and Kananaskis Village.

This year the snow is deep and already there is a well trodden path into the lake. There are also tracks leading off that could be confusing. The first trail leading off to the left is Tent Ridge, the second trail (old road) to the left ends abruptly after a couple of kilometers.

Once you are in the area of the old cutblocks, take a look around and enjoy the views.  As you near the end of the cutblocks, watch for flagging in the trees; it will take you into a drainage. From here, the winter trail follows the creek to the lake.
