Up to the lake this afternoon. It started off sunny & warm, but something blew in and it started raining at 3 as we were just heading down. This trail is REALLY greasy when it's wet.  Many sections of the trail are in the stream bed. There's a lot of overgrown sections in the creekbed area. The "bridge" that is mentioned is mostly washed away, but the creek is only about 2' wide at that point.

Up in the basin, the larches have not yet started to turn (some are thinking about it), but many other plants have. We poked around to the back of the basin well past the lake, and while we heard pikas, we saw nothing. The odd deer track and some bear scat that was at least a month old was it for the day.

It sure feels like more than a 250 m climb when you're doing it. Especially so when you look across the valley to the Rummel Lake trail.

See separate post under the Hiking Trail section regarding the current state of Hwy 742 and its services.

We found the very same conditions on the Tryst Lake trail last summer, although in our case, we had been up on Tent Ridge, but when an unexpected nasty snow shower swept in, we made a hasty descent down to Tryst Lake – although we made it extra challenging for ourselves by dropping down off Tent Ridge too far to the right, bushwhacking down the steep slopes and ending up well above the lake.  But it's an impressive spot to stand in, under the mountain wall, isn't it.

What made the subsequent descent down to Mt. Engadine Lodge road from the lake easier for us were our Microspikes, which I tend to carry with me on most hikes in all seasons (unless weather/route is going to be perfectly dry) as they are awesome for steep slippery/muddy trails just like that one.  We met a couple of hikers on the trail and exchanged comments about the merits of Microspike versus Yaktrak, altho both were a definite asset that summer day!
