Old Goat Glacier Aug 6 | Trip Reports | Kananaskis Outdoors Forum

Took a full day to explore the basin and wander on the glacier today. Perfect weather, perfect day. Trail is fine, but hiking poles are seriously recommended for the descent. No signs of troublesome wildlife. Others reported a mountain goat sighting but all we saw were pikas and marmots. No bear signs, only a bit of elk poo, no deer tracks, and the only canid footprints we saw were puppies on leashes.

Awesome ice channels on the glacial run out streams. Falls are churning. Great day, great hike.

If you want to walk on the glacier, I suggest that you peel off right towards the house sized boulder with cairns on top just past the "end of the trail" rocks (currently marked with a circle of cairns in the mud). Head left and down towards where the creek comes out of the gravel field. At that point, either cross the ice bridges towards the snow, or stay left and cross the head of the stream. Both lead to easy accesses to the glacier.
