Did Mist ridge on sunday with a friend. Unfortunately mist creek to the pass at the north end was (and still is) closed due to grizzlies feeding on a horse carcass. This meant we had to hike the ridge to the north summit and return the way we came. The trail is in nice condition except is a bit narrow and bushy near the beginning. Otherwise a beautiful hike with stunning views of Mist mountain, Storm mountain and countless others. Also I was able to get plenty of photos of unnamed peaks to the east and Gibraltar mountain, which I had attempted 15 years previous but had to back off because of time constraints. That trip was an epic as we almost had a companion drown crossing cliff creek on the return. Near the crest of the ridge (just before the approach road ends) we met a pair of hunters who had killed a (i'm sure beautiful) sixpoint elk and had his antlers on one of their packs. They were joking about how they were going to get the rest of him back to their vehicle and warned us they had seen a grizz nearby the day before. I thought later they probably had no intention of removing his carcass, which disgusted me. Unfortunately this also makes Mist ridge a dangerous trip choice because if the carcass is still there it would attract bears/other carnivores to be uncomfortably close to the ridge crest and the hiking trail. Use Caution if you hike up there!

As far as the ridge goes it is truly beautiful and I would highly recommend it! (Maybe try it next year when there aren't any carcasses lying around!)

Any guesses as to the origins of the horse carcass? I can only think it was put there by Parks. I'm not aware of any wild horses in the area, nor do I think it likely that someone was riding in the area and had their horse die on them…

Apparently, the horse broke a leg and had to be put down.

If those guys did not remove the edible portions of the elk, they are breaking the law. Hunters must remove all edible portions of any game animal.

I was up the valley and onto the ridge near Storm Mountian Monday and Tuesday – didn't see any bear sign at all. I did hear a couple of elk bugles though. What a spectacular area!
