As you can see below, Sunday afternoon was perfect at Headwall Lakes. We had talked about doing the circuit with the Chester Valley, but Chester Lake remains closed. Smoke from the Buller prescribed burn was not an issue.

Some wildflowers still hanging in there.

Route back down to the lower lake via grassy benches, rather than sliding down the steep trail beside the cascades.

If you are going in via the "shortcut" route as we did, take care to find the logging road leading directly to "Blue" trail. We had done that on a previous Headwall hike, but this time, fooled by a cairn at roadside and a well defined old road-cut, we started up, turned right at the ski trail, but after some time strolling mindlessly along paying too much attention to searching out strawberries, we realized that we were on the lower leg of "Yellow". Oops!

A bit of backtracking though saw us on the correct ski trail. The route from where we parked works fine, just be sure to turn left instead of right.
