The Smith-Dorrien ski trails  are in jeopardy. The latest  demotion has been the removal of all signs. We want to know what you think of this?

Ahhh i love our trail systems so much. I consider myself a beginner trail user who goes out several times each summer AND winter. I rely on signs to get me around the back ground as I never take maps. (I know…bad idea). The snowshoe signs are a god-sent in the winter. I wouldn’t know what to do without them. As for hiking maps, I actually wish there were more. My two cents!

I do and will continue to take care of our trails!

Yes, I noticed that the signs were all gone this year. I would personally be prepared to commit time and energy to trail/sign maintenance for both summer and winter use, and I'm guessing that there are lots of folks who would be willing to help out also. We could create a network of volunteers quite quickly, I suspect.

I don't understand why they would go through the effort of removing the signs because they aren't going to maintain the trails. Are they looking to seriously discourage use of the area?

I understand that the area is no longer trackset, and I don't mind if they simply decommission the trails, so people know that if they want to bike, they're on their own for maintenance. I think they've been enjoyed as skier-tracked XC or light touring areas for the last couple years, and there is no reason for that to stop.

But why actually remove the signs and make it more difficult for people to navigate the area? Why not just leave the loops marked for people to do with as they please? Even to get into the Headwall Lakes or something, it helped a lot to have the blue/yellow and blue dots to follow. This doesn't make any sense to me.

You don't have the resources to trackset them, fine. You want to leave them unofficial trails for willing persons to clear, fine. But putting work in to make it more difficult is silly.

I'm a mediocre mountain biker and while singletrack is fun, I'm up for taking it easier on open trails sometimes too. But then, I too mostly just bike for access.
