When we go down to the Sheep River area of Kananaskis Country we often get up early and drive to Turner Valley for breakfast. One of our favorite places is Coyote Moon, one block north of the main junction on Hwy 22 (Main Street). It has a pleasant, rustic atmosphere with local art (for sale) on the walls and friendly staff.

The Canadian Avalanche Centre has produced a new version of the Avaluator! So what’s new? Obvious Clues are gone. There is a new Slope Evaluation card that uses a rules-based approach to travel in avalanche terrain, and the old Trip Planner, used as a basis for the Online Avaluator, is still there. Here are the details.

The Greater Bragg Creek Trails Association has completed the first of its planned new trails at West Bragg. Congratulations! To be known as Snowshoe Hare, the new 5.4 km snowshoe trail starts and finishes at West Bragg parking lot. It has been well-signed for snowshoeing in either direction.

Bowing to unrelenting pressure from Conservation groups and the general public, the Alberta Government will allow the proposed new Alberta Parks Act, Bill 29, to ‘die on the order paper’. Minister Cindy Ady said the province will re-introduce the legislation next year.

This week’s Rocky Mountain Outlook reports suspected sabotage along Canmore’s Montane Traverse trail, a popular mountain bike trail on the north side of the Bow Valley. The outdoor community needs to be vigilant until the issue has been resolved, and report any evidence of sabotage or suspicious activity to the RCMP.

Dianne Pachal of the Sierra Club Canada has advised us that there will be a debate today, November 15th, on Alberta’s Tourism, Parks & Recreation Minister’s proposed new parks act (Bill 29). “It is THE worst conservation-related legislation we’ve seen anywhere in Canada in a generation,” she says. “It could become law within the week unless enough people write now to stop it and open up consultation on it”

Not to be outdone by the National parks, Canadian Mountain Ziplines of Kananaskis, Alberta is proposing to build a via ferrata across the face of Mount John Laurie (better known as Yamnuska) to provide people with limited climbing ability with an exciting route to its lofty summit. Without the risks associated with rock climbing climbing or unprotected scrambling; so they say.
